Ladies & Gents:
Confession: I am TIRED from driving for the last three days (also, the internet tells me jet lag without the jet is jeep lag – but only for me). So instead of the usual, I'm going to talk about this tweet:
If you’ve written a memoir and say you haven’t cast the movie: you’re lying.
— Jen A. Miller (@byJenAMiller) September 18, 2017
I tweeted that on Sunday night during the Emmys, and I tweeted it because it's true. It's become a bit of a parlor game in my family because it's fun! Why not pick which generically perfect person would play you in a film adaptation of your book? So this week's newsletter will be the fictional casting of the Running: A Love Story, which I see as a limited run prestige drama perfect for HBO, Netflix or Amazon Prime. See, Reese Witherspoon? I'm making this easy for you!
A few things to note: Because of lawyers, I had to change descriptive details about a lot of people in the book. If you want to talk about my choices, I kindly ask that you refrain from saying things like "but in real life he…" or from using that person's real name. Because lawyers. Also, my family members aren't named in Running: A Love Story, so they're listed as their titles to me below. And if an actor isn't terrible well known, I've given you a credit hint.
Without further ado…
As cast by the author
In her dreams
Jen: Melissa Benoist of Supergirl. This is my dad's pick, and he's not wrong. She's the right age and looks like a much buffer version of the me from that period of time. We also have the same (feminist) sweatshirt.
Mom: Felicity Huffman
Dad: Kevin Costner because dad asked, and I'm not going to tell him no in the land of make believe.
Steve/Stephen: Chris Evans
Jason: Justin Baldoni of Jane the Virgin
Nick: Adam Driver of the most recent Star War
If this were sold as a two part series with a book about my road trip forming the source material (a book that is as fictional as the prestige drama of Running: A Love Story), the following roles would be cast because they'd be big enough to require a "name" for two seasons:
Older Brother: Chris Pine
Sister: Jessica Pare of Madmen
Younger Brother: John Early of Search Party
College Roommate: Keke Palmer of Scream and Grease Live! (also a recording artist, which is needed here)
Nathan: Neil Patrick Harris
Guy I went to Italy with: Richard Ayoade of The IT Crowd
Grandmom: Jane Fonda
That was fun. I'm going to go take a nap now.
