Another marathon is in the books! And with it: a new PR! Despite the book tour, the foot injury, the concussion, and a whole lot of other stuff, I managed to squeak out a 37 second PR in the 2016 New Jersey Marathon (full race recap is below). I was shocked, surprised and of course delighted. And sore. Very sore. I'm doing better than I did last Monday, but my legs still fatigue easily (I've been walking instead of running, but still) and my toes are gross. I also pulled a muscle in my chest, which has made it hard to take deep breaths, but I'm getting there.
That's the real reason I put off writing the newsletter last week. For a very scary hour, my doctor thought I might have had a collapsed lung, but even after I got the all clear, I still just took some time to rest and…well, not do much.
After the marathon, I also happened to be in the Philadelphia Apple Store when a guy who goes by the name Philly Jesus was arrested. I took a picture. The picture went everywhere – the story even further, all the way to Saturday Night Live. What a weird two weeks it's been.
Since I skipped last week's newsletter, I've got a boatload of stuff to get to, so shall we?
First up: I'll be at the Capital City Book Fair in Trenton this Saturday at 1pm. Saturday is also Taste of Trenton, so you can come to hear me talk and the stuff your face (the food festival is on Friday and Sunday too). Cool? Cool. And then I don't have another event until June 1. Stay tuned for details there.

"2016 New Jersey Marathon Recap"
Jen Talks About Her Book
"Mother-daughter running duo to celebrate Mother's Day" for Another Mother Runner. FINALLY mom gets her say (she talks a lot about her first half marathon)
"Jen Miller on her memoir Running: A Love Story; marathoner Bobbi Gibb on Boston" for Radio Times. If you like the espnW story I wrote about Gibb, you've GOT to listen to the interview.
AND TV! I don't know how to title this, but here's me on Fox29. I filmed this the day before I got the concussion. PHEW on that timing.
People Talk about Jen's Book
"The Running: A Love Story workout" on Bikini Bookworm. Hey at least it's not a drinking game!
"Runner Reads: Running A Love Story by Jen A. Miller" on She Runs by the Seashore.
"Like a Marathon, Running: A Love Story Ends with a Payoff that Negates Doubts Along the Way" on The Friedman Sprout. I made it clear to the writer after this posted (and he added a note) that I'm not sponsored by anyone, so I'll say it here too: I'm not sponsored by anyone. I do this for a few reasons, but the main one is that I want you guys to know that if I recommend something, it's because I really like it, not because someone paid me to say that. Okay? Okay.
What I'm Reading
Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan. Want to feel like your memoir wasn't quite up to snuff? Read one that won a Pulitzer. I'm half kidding. It's good (though I'm not kidding about that).
I'm also listening to the podcast Beef & Dairy Network, catching up from the start. My reaction through three shows has been "……….what?" But I'm still here. Please listen. It's so wonderfully bizarre even if I still don't quite get what's going on.
What I'm Watching
The Friday and Saturday before the marathon, and then after when I didn't want to get up off the couch, I burned through Outlander. It was interning to watch having just finished book four but with book one more than a year and a half behind me. I forgot a lot and/or things made much more sense when I knew what was about to happen. It's not the easiest thing to watch at times. At least I knew when those parts were coming. Now that I'm caught up, I'm working through Home Fires. I've been reading a lot about WW II and post-WW II. I'm not sure why, but this show fits. And of COURSE I saw Captain America: Civil War. Still #teamcap, though that was really an Avengers movie, no?
