Ladies & Gents:
I can't pretend that things are normal. I have spent the last six days in turmoil, mortally worried about myself, my friends, our way of life. I am not exaggerating when I say that. The spike in hate crimes combined with that…person already lobbing threats at a place where I have written for 10 years are reasons for the immediate panic. The stripping of rights of anyone who isn't a white, heterosexual, Christian man is the middle ground fear (especially since he's given a White House post to a white nationalist). And the long term terror is that this is the last gear to click into place that will elevate an already rising tide of fascism across the world.
If you're tempted to tell me it'll be OK, don't. Don't tell me not to be scared, and don't tell me to calm down either. I already had a run in with a man in a Make America Great Again hat, and a friend was verbally assaulted while in the drive through at Starbucks because a white guy decided that she should have pulled up further in line. She had her baby with her. And that's not even scratching the surface of what else has been reported.
It's been less than a week.
Go ahead and unsubscribe if you think I'm being hysterical, or if you're going to tsk tsk me, or implore me to understand people who voted for someone who openly and often shared his detest for minorities, women, the LGBT community, the disabled and people who are not Christian. I don't have the time or the energy to argue with you. That's not me not wanting to listen to the other side. That's me drawing a line in the sand against hate and those who supported it – whether they say they meant to or not.
And if you're already having buyer's remorse, well – I hope you have an action plan of what you're going to do to combat all this, though I'm not sure how much that'll help. The lid is already off that box.
If you're sticking around: the usually stuff is below. I almost didn't continue, but I'm not going to cancel the newsletter because of this. You may see a change in the kind of stuff I'm writing, but the show, at least here, must go on.
I expect that, in 20 years, I'll look back on my work and split it into two parts: before and after this election. I can't see it being any other way.

What I'm Reading
A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal by Ben Macintyre. I heard an interview with Macintyre about his new book, and in the interview he talked about Philby. I learned about him when I read up on the movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I've done a lot of reading about WW II in the last year or so. I expect that to continue.
What I'm Watching
The Crown. It is as good as everyone's said – and the only thing that can take my mind, at least for a little while, off things.
