We have (sigh) once again seen a surge of media layoffs, so I wanted to share a quick reminder that I wrote an ebook for this crowd: Notes from a Hired Pen: Freelance Writing for Laid-Off Journalists (and Those Who Want to Quit). My question is, would you describe both a typical day and typical week in your freelance writing life? I also get that there may be no typical day/week, but I find these day in the life/week in the life both fascinating and informative. Curious how much time you’re spending pitching stories vs writing them, how much time you’re on the phone in interviews (do you just do phone interviews, zoom interviews, etc.). Apparently, this is a million question-one question (ahem). Also, how do you take notes during an interview for an article? Do you record digitally, visually, take shorthand? Any or all of the answers to those questions would appreciated and enjoyed.
