Ladies & Gents:
If you’re getting this, you’ve joined the “Soon-to-Be-Named Jen A. Miller Newsletter” at the ground floor. Congrats. If this were a start up, I’d offer you equity, but since the only equity I have is sweat, you may want to steer clear of that (though if you have suggestions for a newsletter title, I’m all ears).
My name is Jen A. Miller. I’m a freelance writer and author, runner, Garden State defender and lover of all dogs, especially my old, cranky, snuggly Jack Russell Terrier named Emily. I have been a freelancer writer – full time – for the last 10 years. My third book, Running: A Love Story, will be published by Seal Press next spring.
Before Facebook and Twitter were really a thing, I sent around a periodic email called “Updates from Jen A. Miller” that included a round up of pieces I’d recently published. I now share my work on social media, but not everyone can be keyed in at every second to catch when I post those links, and I don’t trust Facebook’s algorithms to share links I put on my professional page with everyone who wants to see them. Also, when I wrote a Jersey Shore blog, I shared some of my personal experiences there, and I miss that (I no longer update that blog).
I hope this newsletter can replace those things, and be a place where I share what I’m writing and what I’m doing (without cannibalizing my paid work). When the book is close to publication, and then when it’s out, I’ll share what other people write about it and me (good and bad!), and what book-related activities I’ll be doing. I’m toying around with the idea of driving cross country with the book next summer, stopping at running stores and to run with running groups, so if that happens, I’ll publish that schedule here.
Until then: very (very) early tomorrow morning, I’m driving to Asheville, N.C. for a much needed post book writing vacation. I’ve been there before, and am completely jazzed to go back for a longer stretch of time. I plan to hang out at an incredible bookstore/bar (why don’t we have one of those here?!), run, hike, eat, drink, sleeeeep, read and play pinball. I’m taking highways down, but driving the Blue Ridge Parkway back.
While I’m away, here’s what I’ve published lately:
“The dirt on all things trail running,” Philadelphia Inquirer
“Taking a run break,” Zelle
“‘Year my mother came back’: Memoir of being several mothers,” Philadelphia Inquirer
“Why your business needs a Pinterest presence,” CIO.com
“College Strategies: Best ways to help with the tuition bill,” Financial Planning
What I’m Reading: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Late to the party, I know. I’m also listening to the audiobook of
The Bling Ring: How a Gang of Fame-Obsessed Teens Ripped Off Hollywood and Shocked the World by Nancy Jo Sales during the drive down.
What I’m Watching: Gilmore Girls. I never saw it the first time around. It’s fun to watch now, and I get why I would have loved it as a late teen. Bonus Jon Hamm in an episode I watched yesterday from season 3.
So thanks for reading. Pass this on if you like, and I hope you enjoy wherever we go together through this newsletter. If you’d like to follow along on my trip, hit up my Twitter and/or Instagram accounts, which are listed below.
